We're gearing up for a summer full of visibility events at local farmer's markets, the rally on the 22nd, and a JUFJ sponsored canvass event and training at the end of July. We'll also be talking about a strategy vis a vis lobbying the council. At the meeting, we’ll have a full report on where each DC Councilmember is on Walmart and a Community Benefits Agreement.
If you’ve never been to a meeting and don’t know much about the campaign but just sort of feel it in your gut that Walmart is bad and you want to do something, please join us! You’ll get all the info and training you need at any and all of our Living Wages, Healthy Communities' events. Click here for more information about the campaign.
We'll have nosh, so please RSVP to Rachel Streitfeld at rachel.streitfeld@gmail.com or 954-290-8600 by 6/20 so we know how many snacks to buy!

Corporate America's role in redefining the labor movement and worker's rights is the focus of Koch Party tonight at Busboys & Poets. This monthly series is designed to raise awareness around issues traditionally championed by organized labor, in this case, the impact of corporate money on worker's rights. Andy Kroll, staff writer at Mother Jones, and Will Robinson, founding partner at the New Media Firm political consulting agency, will explore how conservatives across the country – like the infamous Koch brothers -- have been hard at work trying to dismantle the middle class by diminishing collective bargaining rights and how the situation in Wisconsin foretells the expanding role played by groups with murky ties to wealthy corporate executives as they push a conservative agenda. After the panelists share their thoughts and opinions, the floor will be open for what's expected to be a lively Q&A session.

Join Newspaper Guild members as they protest attempts by The Washington Post to severely cut contract job protections. Bargaining began on May 4th; the Guild contract, now expired, contains protections against the effects of outsourcing and provides for largely seniority-based layoff and recall, but Post management wants to gut these provisions. In addition, more than half of Guild-covered Post employees haven’t received a raise since May 2008. The Post is offering a paltry $800 lump sum and no increase for two years, while Publisher Katherine Weymouth took a fat 16.4% raise for herself in April, as well as a $1.5 million bonus.
Come support Respect DC's effort to compel Walmart to provide living wages and good benefits for DC employees in the four stores the largest retailer in the world plans on building in DC. And support it by hearing some good classical/alternative music performed by the Classical Revolution's Columbia Players. The benefit will take place at BloomBars, a few blocks from the Columbia Heights metro station.h. A $10 donation is suggested.
BloomBars does not serve food or drink, but there are numerous bars/restaurants nearby!!
Please take a moment and think about friends/networks that you can alert about the event. We want a good turnout, both to support Respect DC and to encourage classical music in something other than the "normal" classical music venues. Thank you!
Everyone is invited to join us on Wednesday July 20th, 6:30-9pm, for our community meeting. We'll gather to hear about JUFJ's work over the last several months, learn how to get involved in current projects, and come together as a community! We'll provide a light dinner (vegetarian and kosher). RSVP here.
Respect DC is a coalition of grassroots-based organizations, pastors, workers, environmentalists, parents, students and community members concerned about the quality of life in DC’s communities and committed to securing decent, living wage jobs. Respect DC is trying to compel Walmart to provide living wages and good benefits for DC employees in the four stores the largest retailer in the world plans on building in DC.
At the meeting, we'll discuss call-in days and Council targets. Please RSVP to Rachel Streitfeld at rachel.streitfeld@gmail.com.
