This year's budget has less money for affordable housing than it had last year. The second year in a row over $20 million has been lost from the housing budget.

DC Shelters are growing to temporarily house hundreds of new homeless families. They need a permanent housing option.

Funds to build and protect affordable housing have dried up to a trickle in recent years. We need to reverse this trend.

This budget does not meet the housing needs of DC residents, and must be changed.

You can also testify at the Department of Housing and Community Development hearing on the 18th beginning at 2:00 PM. We need a stong and diverse showing to let the Council know the housing budget must be changed.

To sign up to testify go here: http://action.dccouncil.us/page/s/sign-up-to-testify
If you want help with your testimony contact efalcon@cnhed.org

May Day is a time to come together to celebrate solidarity and possibility. It’s an ancient holiday that welcomes the return of spring. Since the Haymarket Massacre in 1886 – the bombing of a peaceful workers’ rally for the 8-hour workday – it’s been recognized as the global International Workers’ Day. And, in recent years, it’s been tied to the movement for immigrants’ rights.

This May Day there’s even more reason to celebrate. Throughout 2011, people around the world rose up together and took a stand against social and economic injustice. To show that the strength of this unity just keeps growing there is a global call to join together on May 1st and leave our jobs, classrooms, and other obligations to enjoy a “vacation for the 99%.”

So come on out and meet with friends and neighbors as we share our passions, support each others’ struggles and work to build a stronger community at the MAY DAY FESTIVAL 2012 at Malcolm X Park!

Start: 7:00 pm
End: 9:00 pm

Top fundraiser Jerry Panas explains that "storytelling is the fiber of relationship building."

Making emotional connections with potential donors can move them from concern to passion to cash. Studies show your audience will remember just 5% to 10% of your message if conveyed via facts and figures. That number jumps to 65% to 70% if conveyed via a story.

In this workshop, Nancy Bocskor, who is a professor of fundraising at George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management, will teach how the art of storytelling can boost your bottom line. She has worked in more than 20 countries promoting civil society and teaching leadership skills, especially to women in emerging democracies.

You'll learn:

• The Five Steps of Crafting a Successful Story
• How to Transform Yourself into "Storytelling Superhero"
• Lessons from Dale Carnegie, Harry Winston and other great motivators
• How to Collect Stories in Your International Development Work

This past Friday, ICE announced cosmetic changes for its 'S-Comm' program. ICE will begin deportation proceedings post conviction for traffic offenses. Ridiculous! As Congressman Luis Gutierrez put it it "Only the federal government can turn a $50 traffic violation into a broken family by deporting a parent."

More than ever its clear that our local government needs to pass the DC Immigration Detainer Compliance Act, which would prevent hundreds of DC residents' deportations.

JUFJ is organizing a group to meet with staffers of key DC Council Members to make it clear that we and the rest of DC do not want our local police officers enforcing a broken immigration system. As of right now, appointments have been made with staffers of 3 of the council members on the Judiciary Committee. People will meet with:

Jack Evan's staff
Muriel Bowser's staff
Marion Barry's staff

Over the last few years, the Mayor and City Council have cut funding to safety net programs like affordable housing, homeless services, TANF, and Child Care. Meanwhile, DC residents are forced to make impossible choices to make ends meet.

Join the DC Fair Budget Coalition as they fight CUTS to the safety net, and show City Council members what it’s really like to live in poverty!

Housing costs may be down nationwide, but today in DC you must earn $60,000/yr to avoid paying more than 30% of your income on the average 1 BR studio apartment. The city has gained tens of thousands of new residents in the last 10 years, and tens of thousands more who made their homes here have left.

Here's the good news: Shaw neighborhood activists have been coming together for community-led development for more than fifty years, and there's a lot we can learn from their efforts to make sure neighborhood change doesn't lead to displacement.
