Jeremiah Fellows see DC Gentrification Firsthand

Last Sunday, local activist Andrew Willis Garces led a group of Jeremiah Fellows on a "gentrification tour" of D.C.
Starting in Anacostia and ending on Georgia Avenue NW, the Fellows explored both familiar and new DC territory, learning about the history of the struggle to protect affordable housing, and the role that local government, community organizations, and churches have played in shaping the city's changing landscape.
The tour is a key piece of the Jeremiah Fellowship's unit on gentrification. Here are several thoughtful articles and resources related to this complicated issue:
- Washington City Paper's Handbook for the Responsible Gentrifier , by Michael Schaffer
- DC Fiscal Policy Institute's Report on Affordable Housing in DC , by Jenny Reed
- Washington City Paper's "Confessions of a Black Gentrifier: When demographic change doesn't involve color," by Shani O. Hilton
Another article on gentrification seems to come out every few days. For recommendations on more, contact Monica at monica@jufj.org.
