Maryland State

11 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

MD Public Safety Hearing: Support SB285

Maryland State
Miller Senate Office Building
11 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

Jewish sacred texts declare that destroying even one life is akin to destroying a whole world. Unfortunately, we know that in Maryland, lives are destroyed every day, especially Black and brown lives, by our system of policing. Join us in Annapolis (or tune in on your own virtually!) at the Senate Judicial Proceedings committee hearing for SB285, which would allow local jurisdictions to grant their Police Accountability Boards independent investigatory powers!

MD Immigrant Rights Rally & Hearing/Watch Party: Support SB365

Maryland State
Miller Senate Office Building
11 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

Jewish sacred texts compel us to ensure that those of us who were not born in our community are as safe, and as healthy, as those of us who were. Join us in Annapolis or tune in virtually to the Senate Finance Committee hearing for SB365, which would expand Affordable Care Act eligibility to all Marylanders, regardless of their immigration status!

Day of Action for Maryland Youth Justice

Maryland State
Lawyer's Mall
100 State Cir, Annapolis, MD

Every child must be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. Join JUFJ and our partners in the Maryland Youth Justice Coalition for a day of action in Annapolis in support of the YES Act! We'll be gathering outdoors in the morning with the coalition, and then joining the bill's committee hearing in the afternoon. Come to either (or both!) and submit testimony for the hearing even if you can't come to Annapolis in person.

Baltimore Public Safety Hearing: Local Police Control

Baltimore
Baltimore City Hall
100 Holliday Street, Baltimore, MD

Judaism’s ethic of mutual care calls us to hold police accountable to the people — but Baltimore City doesn’t control its own police department, meaning our city’s elected officials cannot legislate much-needed reforms to the Baltimore Police Department. Join us and the Campaign for Justice, Safety & Jobs for an informational hearing about restoring local control.

MD Immigrant Rights Hearing/Watch Party: Support HB588

Maryland State
Lowe House Office Building
6 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

Jewish sacred texts compel us to ensure that those of us who were not born in our community are as safe, and as healthy, as those of us who were. Join us in Annapolis or on Zoom at the House Health and Government Operations Committee hearing for HB588, which would expand Affordable Care Act eligibility to all Marylanders, regardless of their immigration status!

MD Public Safety Hearing: Support SB758

Maryland State
Miller Senate Office Building
11 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

Jewish sacred texts declare that destroying even one life is akin to destroying a whole world. Unfortunately, we know that in Maryland, lives are destroyed every day, especially Black and brown lives, by our system of policing. Join us in person (or tune in on your own virtually) at the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee hearing for SB758, which would restore control of the Baltimore police department to Baltimore City residents and their elected representatives in the City Council.

MD Labor Justice Hearing/Watch Party: Support SB828

Maryland State
Lowe House Office Building
6 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

Our sages teach us that to deny an employee the time and wages they need to care for themselves and their family is to take their very life from them. Nobody should have to choose between their job and caring for their family. Join us in Annapolis or on Zoom at the Senate Finance Committee hearing for SB828. The bill would clarify details of the Time to Care Act to ensure the paid time off it guarantees to Maryland workers is accessible and equitable.

MD Court and Prison Reform Hearing/Watch Party: Support HB96

Maryland State
Lowe House Office Building
6 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

The Torah commands us to pursue justice, and our sages instruct us that the methods we use to do so must be just themselves. The practice of automatically charging youths as adults in Maryland is unjust, ineffective and disproportionally targets Black and brown youth. Join us in Annapolis or on Zoom for the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HB96, the Youth Equity and Safety Act, which would put an end to the racist practice of autocharge.

DC Purim Prep

This year, the first vote on the Street Vendor Advancement Act falls on Purim, and we’re headed to the Wilson Building to deliver mishloach manot to the vendors who are pushing for this bill to pass, to demonstrate our community’s support for their dignity and safety.

MD Court and Prison Reform Senate Hearing: Funding for Women’s Prerelease Facility

Maryland State
Miller Senate Office Building
11 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

JUFJ is guided by the Jewish concept of tzelem elohim, which teaches that all people are created in the Divine image, with inherent and equal dignity and value. Prerelease programs help people nearing the end of their prison sentences secure employment, housing, drug treatment, mental health services, and family support. There are multiple facilities for men in Maryland, but none for women. Join us in Annapolis (or tune in on your own virtually) for the Senate Capital Budget Subcommittee's budget hearing to advocate that the funding we won last year (but was struck from the FY24 budget) be put back in the budget and that the women's prerelease facility be fully funded to avoid any further delays in implementation.

Montgomery County Rent Stabilization Hearings

Join us for the Montgomery County Council's hearing on two key rent-stabilization bills: the HOME Act (16-23) which would stabilize rent at a max of 3%, and the “Anti-Rent Gouging” Bill (15-23) which would codify unaffordable double digit rent increases. Join us in the afternoon in person or in the evening either in person or online.

Nearly everyone needs time away from work at some point to care for a relative, deal with a serious personal illness, or welcome a baby. Our Torah understands this reality, and our sacred texts implore employers to do right by their employees. Join us in Annapolis at the House Economic Matters Committee hearing for SB828, which would implement paid family and medical leave strongly and equitably.
