Jewish sacred texts recognize that having safe, stable housing is key to a healthy society. Join our Housing Security Working Group meeting in person or on Zoom to help organize the Jewish community around the Green New Deal for Housing!
Join us at the Montgomery County Council building in Rockville for an important worksession on Bill 32-23, which would significantly weaken Montgomery County's Civilian Police Advisory Commission. It is crucial that we show up with our partners to let our Councilmembers know that we oppose any effort to roll back hard-fought police accountability measures.
Jewish tradition holds sacred both the value of work and the need to take time away from that work to care for ourselves and our families. Join the Maryland Time To Care Coalition meeting for updates and specific ways to take action to ensure the strongest implementation of paid family and medical leave across our state.
Join JUFJers from across Baltimore for a special Baltimore Action Team meeting in the sukkah! We will enjoy pizza, reflect on the holiday of Sukkot, and discuss our ongoing issue campaign work. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a regular attendee or new to the work! The meeting will take place outside in the sukkah at Beth Am Synagogue. Please dress accordingly. In the event of rain, we will move the meeting online.
Sukkot is a holiday that reminds us to think about what it means to have a roof over our heads and a safe, stable place to live. Join JUFJ's Montgomery County housing team for an outdoor, in-person Sukkot dinner at B'nai Israel in Rockville. We invite you to bring your own dinner (no meat, please!) and nosh, learn, and socialize with us!
Jewish sacred texts teach us that the world was created with both justice and mercy. Here in Maryland, children who are charged with certain crimes are sentenced as if they were adults. That is neither just nor merciful. Join JUFJ's youth justice working group as we discuss the campaign to pass the Youth Equity and Safety (YES) Act.
Baltimore relies on facial recognition and other forms of surveillance technology to turn regular people into informants for the police. You need to know exactly what this surveillance and tracking technology does and what you can do to protect your face, data and privacy. Watch Netflix’s "Coded Bias" with the Campaign for Justice, Safety and Jobs and join us for some delicious food and even more delicious conversation about facial recognition technology.
Since 2018, JUFJ has been part of the local movement to transform public safety in Montgomery County. One of the core coalitions in this movement formed in 2020, with a focus on ending the practice of treating Montgomery County Public School students — especially Black and brown students — as criminals. That coalition is relaunching as the Montgomery County Decriminalization Coalition, and you’re invited to the launch party! Join the new coalition on Sunday, October 22 at 3:00 PM at Gene Lynch Urban Park in Silver Spring (8410 Colesville Rd) to learn about what we can do together to forge a path towards safer traffic enforcement, a fairer education system, and a community where all residents can live and thrive without criminalization.
